The New Way Forward: a short preface

by mattathon @ 2007-04-09 - 18:52:32

After months of deliberating, philosophising and conceptualising the modern political problems that face us here in the UK I have decided that in order to come to terms with the geo-political climate that we face a number of things have to be done. This is not to say that these things will be done (although there are many signs of my prescription currently being carried out in embryonic form) but I believe that in order to stop wetern democracy from decaying into effective dictatorship we must begin to implement these changes.

Some of these changes are extremely radical. They involve a restructuring of democratic society as it exists. Others are more subtle yet no less important or crucial in the struggle to overcome religious fundamentalist terrorism, to adapt to the consequences of global warming, to (not 'renew', I hate that horrible Blairite word) return society to the democratic route it has been heading down for centuries but has strayed from in recent years but also to warn about the limits of democracy and the sacrafices that need to be made that appear to go against democracy.

My points will not sit well with modern democratic parties. They are uncomfortable about the problems that global warming brings up - the problems with individual liberty, with democracy, with freedom. They are not aware of the scale of the problem, nor are they aware of the scale of the solution. Maybe if a politician were to read this they would go at least some way to realising the gargantuan task that lies before them. Modern politicians would also dislike my calls for radical anti-democratisation of the media and radical reingagement of the mass electorate with the political process. But this Blog is not supposed to be an advisory message to politicians about policy - it is intended to be a political philosophy for the 21st Century (pretentious I know) that differs from the out-dated discourse of left-right politics. The reason it does this is because of one vital ingredient that has come to dictate politics more than anything - science.

I will expand later but for now it must be noted that, especially in my prescription for action on the issue of global warming, my assertions will be extremely strong and virulent due to the extremely assertive nature of scientific conclusion and the concrete problems that it offers.

The full text of what I call 'The New Way Forward' will appear on this Blog in installments over the next couple of months.
